MCA leaders slam Anwar for being selfish

The Star, Wednesday January 29, 2014

KAJANG: MCA leaders have hit out at PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, calling him a selfish person.

Hulu Langat MCA chief Lee Ban Seng said Anwar had no intention of serving the people nor the constituency.

“He is merely eyeing the (Selangor) Mentri Besar seat and has gone to the extent to order an elected representative to resign to pave way for him to try to enter the state assembly and eventually replace Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as the MB if he wins.

“This is not fair for those who voted for Lee Chin Cheh,” he said.

The politician, who stood against Chin Cheh in a six-cornered fight in the 13th general election, said the by-election which would be conducted soon to fill the Kajang state seat vacated by Chin Cheh is meaningless and a waste of money and manpower.

It was reported that the Election Commission spent about half a million ringgit in the 2008 Permatang Pauh by-election in which Anwar won. The by-election was conducted following the resignation of Anwar’s wife Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

A meeting on the selection of Barisan Nasional candidate for the Kajang seat, traditionally held by the MCA, would take place soon.

Selangor Wanita MCA chief Ong Chong Swen urged Chin Cheh to come out and explain his resignation to the people.

“Come out and tell whether you are incapable of serving the people or forced to resign to make way for a ‘capable’ leader,” she said.

Ong, who is also the wing’s national vice-chairman, said Pakatan Rakyat was not treating the people’s mandate seriously by allowing its elected representative to resign just like that.

MCA Youth national chairman Chong Sin Woon said it was incorrect and improper for PKR to resolve the power tussles in such a manner.

“This is a clear indication that PKR and Pakatan have lied to the people by telling that their paramount concern is the people’s interests,” said Chong, who is also the state Youth chief.

At a time when the cost of living is rising, he added that the by-election is an abuse of the democratic process and a waste of public funds.
