Cops urge public to fill up 'balik kampung' form

KAJANG: Members of the public who will be leaving their homes during the upcoming Hari Raya are urged to fill up the 'balik kampung' form to facilitate police in their surveillance and patrolling activities.

Kajang police chief ACP Othman Nanyan said the public could obtain the form at any police station or download it from the official Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) website.

He said the form must be filled up and returned to any nearest station to enable the police to record details of the said property.

"In addition, we have also distributed the forms to the public at several areas around Kajang.

"We do not want any untoward incidents, including house break-in case, to take place when they are away celebrating Hari Raya at their hometowns," he told reporters after officiating the police district-level 9th Op Selamat' at Sungai Balak toll plaza here today.

He said a total of 1,167 police personnel from Kajang police headquarters would be on duty during Aidilfitri and would be stationed mostly at accident prone areas.

Inmate escapes from Kajang hospital

KAJANG: A prison inmate here escaped from custody while being treated at the Kajang Hospital last night. 

The man, aged 44, was serving a sentence for a drug-related offence and was taken to hospital for treatment for an undisclosed illness. 

He had begun his sentence on Tuesday and was due to be released in December. 

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Othman Nanyan said Kajang Hospital authorities had informed police of the escape about 9.15pm. 

“Police immediately responded by activating all possible elements to search for the escapee. He was, at the time, wearing prison clothing — red pants and white T-shirt — and had his left arm, which was broken, in a cast,” he said. 

Police also activated “Ops Tutup” with several roadblocks conducted to track the inmate. 

Police are now looking for Chow Kim Liong, whose last known address was 8-3-9 Block 8, Jalan 1/1B, Taman Intan Baiduri in Kuala Lumpur. 579 reads Roadblocks were conducted as police searched for the escapee.

SHAH ALAM: Police have expanded the search area for a 44-year-old prisoner who escaped while receiving treatment at the Kajang Hospital yesterday.

Selangor police chief Commissioner Datuk Abdul Samah Mat (pix) said the manhunt for the convict who was serving his jail term for a drug related offence is ongoing with help from various district search teams within Selangor.

"We are considering every possibility here. The prisoner might have escaped from Kajang to another district," Abdul Samah told reporters after attending the pinning of rank ceremony for police volunteer cops at the Selangor police headquarters here today.

"The prisoner might get an extension of his jail term for what he has done now," he said.

Abdul Samah also added that the prison department was in charge when the incident happened.

It was reported that the man who was wearing a red prison pants and a white t-shirt with his left hand in a plaster cast fled the hospital on a RapidKL bus at about 8.10pm yesterday.

On a separate case, police have also confirmed that the two random murders of victims in their cars are connected.

However, Abdul Samah said that he is unable to comment further on the motive as investigations are ongoing.

"Yes both cases are connected but I can't comment on the motive behind the murders.

"'My investigators are in the closing stage of their investigations," Abdul Samah told reporters.

Saravanan Gopal, 29, who was an administrative assistant with a local business newspaper was found murdered in a boot of a BMW in a mining pool in Puchong on May 8 while on May 5, a man was found torched in his car in Kajang.

Meanwhile, police have also arrested 10 individuals believe to be involved with the gang robberies in Jalang Gasing recently.

Abdul Samah said three out of the suspects arrested are directly linked with the parang-wielding robbery and rape of a 26-year old woman at her house here on May 6.

"All of them were arrested in separate raids conducted by police in Damansara, Bukit Jelutong, and Perak.

"The suspects are aged between 24 and 41 and the manhunt for the remaining suspects will continue," he said.

THE recent strong police presence in Bandar Mahkota Cheras caused a stir as the public thought a crime had just taken place.

However, their fears were allayed when it turned out to be a community policing initiative by the Kajang police.

Led by new Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Willey Anak Richard, the delegation members were on the streets, meeting business operators and shaking hands with residents before leaflets and name cards were handed out.

The leaflets were on rape prevention, keeping the home safe from break-ins and women’s safety while the name cards contained mobile phone numbers of all senior police officers.

ACP Willey said the walkabout would be a regular feature of the Kajang police in all business areas in the district.

He said the presence of police could help to deter crime, many of which were opportunistic in nature.
“This is also a good way for my officers to introduce themselves to the people and increase public cooperation.

“It is vital to create an awareness that combating crime is a joint responsibility to make our neighbourhoods a safer and better place to live in,” he said.

Also present were district CID chief Deputy Supt Zulkifli Abu Bakar, district public order and traffic chief DSP Azmi Wahid and Sungai Long OCS Sjn Amir Aris.

ACP Willey said based on his hour-long walkabout, the public response was very encouraging and they were receptive to the idea of seeing regular police presence.

He said the next phase would be to deploy bicycle squads to patrol housing estates in the coming months.

“I have set a target to reduce the crime index by at least 10% before the year end.

“Let’s be realistic that there is no way to achieve a zero crime rate,” he said, adding that the people could assist in cutting down opportunistic crimes such as snatch and motorcycle thefts.

ACP Willey said statistics showed more than 70% were property crimes while 30% were related to serious crimes but not syndicates.

He said during the recent Home Safety campaign for the Hari Raya Aidilfitri festive period, only one house in Bangi was broken into.

The campaign had encouraged homeowners to register with the police before returning to their hometowns.

“This shows the campaign is successful and we will continue having it during other major festive celebrations.

“Kajang district is huge with many new and developing housing estates, resulting in opportunistic criminals on the prowl,” he said.

ACP Willey said despite facing constraints in manpower, their personnel would continue to keep crimes in check.

He said they would also work closely with residents associations, Rukun Tetangga, village security and development committees and volunteer patrolling squads in crime prevention efforts.

Cops in process of removing World War II bomb in Cheras

KAJANG: Police are in the process of removing a bomb, believed to be from World War II, at a jungle-hiking track at Bukit Putih, Batu 9, Cheras.

OCPD Asst Comm Ab Rashid Ab Rashid said a team of bomb experts from Bukit Aman and from various police contingents are involved in the disposal of the explosive.

"We have been on standby since we were first alerted on Saturday at about 7pm.

"The team, comprising 30 bomb experts, moved in at about 10am.

"They have reached the site, which is on the top of the hill, after one and a half hours of hiking," he said.

ACP Ab Rashid added the bomb, weighing over 200kg, has been identified as a Mark 1-952 type.

"It is 47cm in length and 43cm in diameter.

"We are still determining whether it is necessary to dispose the explosive at the site or elsewhere," he said.

On Saturday, police were alerted of the discovery of the bomb by a group of about four hikers.

Police immediately sealed off all entrances and advised the public to stay at least 1.5km radius away from the area.

Six rogue policemen arrested

KAJANG: Six anti-narcotics police personnel who raided a house, claiming that it was used as a drug distribution centre, turned rogue when they found nothing and extorted money from a couple who was there.

The policemen, comprising an Inspector and five lower-ranked personnel from the Kajang police district, first raided the home Monday night.

The suspect and his wife, in their 40s, were then taken to the district police headquarters although no drugs were discovered in their house or on them.

Not satisfied with their failed operation, the policemen allegedly told the couple that their relatives would have to pay about RM12,000 for their release despite their innocence.

One of the relatives agreed to pay the sum. However, he lodged a police report before he agreed to a place where they could meet to hand over the payment.

“The relative went to see the policemen at the police headquarters and handed over the bag of money,” a source said.

“However, immediately after the exchange, a squad of CID police officers arrested the six policemen.”

The couple returned home at about 4.30am the following morning.

It is learnt that the six were released on police bail on Wednesday and have since been suspended from their duties.

Federal Narcotics Crime Investi­gations Department director Comm Datuk Noor Rashid Ibrahim said investigations were ongoing.

“I will not tolerate such wrongdoings by my men,” he said.

“We will uphold the law without fear or favour.”

Thousands throng Kajang stadium for district-level Police Day celebrations

IT WAS a carnival-like atmosphere at the Kajang Stadium recently when thousands of people joined policemen from all ranks to celebrate the 205th Police Day.

The event kicked off with a bicycle jamboree followed by a children’s colouring contest, ketupat-making, flower decoration and coconut-peeling competitions.

There were also exhibitions by several private firms and government agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department at the site.

The police forensic unit booth recorded the highest turnout with its display of an assortment of firearms.

Children took the opportunity to ride horses and sit in the cockpit of several armoured vehicles put on display there.

The highlights of the day were a police dog unit demonstration and a lucky draw.

Two participants of the jamboree won a bicycle each.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab and his deputy Supt Azman Ayob were present to give away the prizes to the winners.

In his speech, ACP Abdul Rashid urged the public to work closely with the authorities to curb crime.

He said several initiatives such as community policing, face-to-face interaction and high-profile policing had succeeded in improving the image of the police force.

”We urge the people to be just as concerned as the police to keep crime in check. Crime will continue to occur whenever there is an opportunity,” he stressed.

ACP Abdul Rashid said public participation and interaction with the police must be strengthened.

He said on their part, the police would continue to engage with the people and carry out community-related activities for mutual benefit.

He also pledged to build a closer rapport with residents’ associations, Rukun Tetangga, non-governmental organisations, the private sector and other enforcement agencies to overcome manpower shortages.

”All of us must look after one another just like a close-knit family in this multi-racial society,” he said.

Cops smash car theft and burglary gang in Kajang

KAJANG: A gang that broke into houses in the morning after home owners had left for work has been crippled with the arrest of three men.

The gang members not only ransacked the houses and stole valuables but also drove away with the victims’ cars.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab said the suspects had broken into two houses here within 24 hours and escaped with two cars.

He said the first incident happened at 5.10am last Thursday when the suspects broke into a house in Section 8, Bangi, and stole a Toyota Camry after ransacking the house.

The next day, the gang broke into the house of a state assemblyman’s special assistant at 7am and drove away in his Proton Exora.

“We launched a hunt immediately and arrested a 29-year-old man at Dataran Cheras four hours later,” he told a press conference.

Police also seized a Toyota Altis from the man, reported to be stolen in Seri Kembangan in January.

Police then raided a house in Balakong and nabbed the second suspect together with the Toyota Camry that was stolen in Bangi.

ACP Abdul Rashid said the third arrest was made at a hotel here.

The Proton Exora was parked at the hotel’s basement parking area.

The gang would monitor the targeted houses early in the morning and break in after the owners had left for work.

“If they manage to find the keys for cars parked in the house, they would steal the cars,” he added.

Police believe the suspects were planning to sell the stolen cars, all of which had false number plates.

Police also seized housebreaking tools from the suspects.

It is learnt the suspects had been active since January and were involved in four such cases.

All the suspects have been remanded.

It’s not the serial splasher

KAJANG: The serial corrosive liquid splasher is not the culprit in the case of a woman in her 20s who was attacked.

Sources said Saturday’s attack was personal in nature and ruled out the possibility that the corrosive liquid splasher who terrorised Klang Valley last year was responsible.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rashid Wahab said laboratory results revealed the liquid was not acid but a floor cleaning liquid with corrosive properties that could still cause a burning sensation.

“The woman only suffered skin inflammation and the effects are not permanent,” he said.

He said a CCTV nearby a beauty parlour where the woman works in Balakong was out of range.
She was unable to identify the suspect as she was attacked from behind.

In an unrelated case, police believe the liquified petroleum gas (LPG) plant in Semenyih which caught fire and set off 2,000 gas cylinders on Tuesday night was running an illegal racket.

Sources said the plant had been operating without a licence for six weeks and was involved in transferring LPG from domestic-use gas tanks to industrial gas tanks.

“There is a possibility the plant operators were selling government-subsidised LPG to industries and factories,” the sources said, adding that the owner had since gone into hiding.

The area has been cordoned off with a policeman on guard because several gas tanks are still leaking and pose a risk of exploding.

The fire also destroyed two LPG tankers, a car and motorcycle.

House break-in gang and leader held

KAJANG: Staying at budget hotels before committing break-ins, the gang led by a man with six fingers also painstakingly carried out surveillance on houses they had targeted.

Police crippled the “Six Fingers” gang when they arrested the 36-year-old leader and four gang members, including a woman.

They had committed at least 13 break-ins in Kajang, Rinching, Sungai Jelok and Semenyih since early last year.

OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab said the gang monitored unoccupied houses.

“We seized a host of weapons and house break-in tools including a fake pistol, parang, baseball bat, knives,, hammer, pliers, screwdrivers and paraphernalia to consume drugs.

“The gang members are experts in break-ins and would attack the owners if they returned home,” he said yesterday.

He added that all the suspects had convictions for break-ins, theft, possession of dangerous weapons and drug-related offences.

ACP Abdul Rashid said urine tests on all the suspects, aged between 28 and 36, came back positive for meth and opiate abuse.

He said four of the suspects, including the leader, were detained at a budget hotel in Semenyih at about 3am on Feb 13.

In a follow-up operation on the same day, another suspect was picked up at a house in Rinching.

ACP Abdul Rashid said police also busted the notorious “Bumper Gang” who staged fake accidents before robbing motorists of their vehicles.

He said two gang members, aged 24 and 25, were detained during a 5km high-speed chase which ended at a construction site in Bandar Teknologi Kajang on Feb 14.

He added that initial investigations showed the gang was responsible for at least 16 car robbery cases, mostly involving Toyota Vios and Camry, in the Klang Valley.

ACP Abdul Rashid said the gang’s modus operandi was to ram into the back of a vehicle driven by a lone driver during odd hours before one of them alighted, pretending to apologise.

He said other accomplices would charge out brandishing dangerous weapons to threaten the victim before speeding of with the car.

Residents learn about crime prevention from the experts

OME 1,000 Cheras Perdana residents braved the scorching 39 degree heat to participate in a community policing event recently.

They learnt about how crime can be reduced through an exhibition and demonstrations by the police.

The half-day event, which took place on the grounds of the Bandar Tun Hussein Onn Carrefour, was organised by the Kajang police district contingent and the Cheras Perdana Neighbourhood Watch committee in collaboration with private organisations.

In his speech, Selangor deputy police chief Datuk A. Thaiveegan said it was crucial for the public to be more vigilant and to help the police fight crime. As the population continued to increase, he said, the public would play an important role in passing on information to assist in investigations.

He said the public should learn about crime prevention methods to keep their neighbourhoods safe.

He said the majority of crimes in the state were committed by youths.

He added that about 75 per cent of serious and drug-related crimes were carried out by them.

Thaiveegan said community policing programmes could help to increase their awareness of the pitfalls of crime and lead to better behaviour within thepatterns alongside the family unit.

“Under the ‘Ready to Serve’ concept, police have stepped up efforts to fight crime by taking a proactive stand to reduce red tape in order to make it easier for the public to lodge reports.

“Police have been conducting community policing programmes to equip the public with crime prevention knowledge and increasing patrols in crime-prone areas,” he said.

An example of this, said Thaiveegan, was the initiative launched recently to allow the public to lodge reports with police personnel on the ground without going to a police station.

He added that collective effort was needed toin the shared responsibility of reduce crime and is needed to ensure peace and unity in the country.

Kajang police chief ACP Mohd Sakaruddin Che Mood said there was a reduction in the crime rate in the Cheras Perdana area with robbery and snatch theft leading in number.

At the Batu 9 police station, the number of there were reductions to serious crime cases recorded fell from 599 in 2008 to 466 last year and robbery cases fellhad fallen from 1,648 in 2008 to 1,353 last year. The area has some 250,000 residents.

In Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, there was a slight increase in serious crime cases from 116 in 2008 to 121 last year. But thebut saw a reducing number of robberies reported declined from 334 cases reported in 2008 to 314 cases last year. There are about 7,000 residents here.

“This was due to a stronger rapport between the public and the police which led to better allocation of resources such as manpower and more effective investigation methods,” said Mohd Sakaruddin.

Cheras Perdana Neighbourhood Watch committee chairman Mansor Sulaiman said: “Various private organisations, NGOs, village heads and residents’ associations worked together to make this event a success and we thanked the police for the for sharing what is community policing programme.”

The public mingled with the top brass of the state Selangor police contingent while being entertained by demonstrations and performances.

The show began with a 1Malaysia dance performance by 20 students from SMK Cheras Perdana.

A T-baton demonstration by 28 officers from the Kajang police district headquarters followed. They showed the crowd how the retractable T-baton is used to disarm and arrest criminals.

Ten officers from the district then staged a poco poco line dance performance to five songs.

A K-9 unit from Pulapol who demonstrated how police dogs are used to apprehend criminals.

There were 10 stalls exhibiting various crime prevention methods and other items set up by police and government agencies.

The Kajang police contingent received 10 Lenovo netbooks from the Masterskill University College of Health Sciences.

The college staff and students offered free medical check-ups, blood grouping tests and physiotherapy treatment to the public.
