KAJANG: With school out because of the haze, what is a young boy to do around the house? One got his head stuck in his house wall.

Luckily, Fire and Rescue Depart­ment officers were quick to respond to the child’s cry for help and got his head dislodged.

The seven-year-old boy was playing at his house porch at about 8am yesterday. Then, he began sticking his head in and out of the gaps of the wall for fun.

Unfortunately, he got his head stuck between one of the gaps and could not free himself.

Semenyih Fire and Rescue Department station chief Khairul Anuar Yaacob said the boy’s father phoned for help.

“We sent our officers to the house in Bandar Tasek Kesuma. They covered the boy’s head with a canvas tarp and then used percussive rescue tools to smash the wall plaster to wriggle his head free from the gap,” said Khairul.

“We got him out in about 15 minutes.”

The child suffered from autism, Khairul added.

“He was restless while we were working to free him,” he said.

“So, we distracted him by letting him wear our goggles and talked to him about himself while we tried to free him.”

Forest fire misses civil servant's house 100m away

KAJANG: A fire missed the home of a civil servant after it razed some 5ha of forest at the Sg Merap Luar hill on Wednesday.

Zainuddin Zainal, 56, whose house was 100m away from the burning trees, said he had returned from buying groceries when he saw the fire raging on the hill behind his house.

"I panicked when I saw the fire and all I thought was running into my house to save my belongings.

"I felt relieved when the firefighters managed to bring the fire under control," he said.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Mohamad Sani Harul said firefighters arrived at the scene in 30 minutes after receiving a call at about 9.30pm.

The team from Bangi and Cyberjaya departments brought the fire under control by 11.30pm.

"There was a stretch of bungalows located near the fire. Fortunately, we acted quickly to prevent the flames from spreading there," said Mohamad Sani.

Firefighter Jailani Wahdani explained that the fire could have started due to the hot weather and the open burning of garbage.

"We are thankful that no one was hurt in the incident," Jailani added.

Blaze starts after blackout

KAJANG: A family of six had no time to save their belongings as a fire broke out right after a blackout on Wednesday night at their home here in Taman Puncak Utama. 

  In the incident at 10pm at the family's two-storey terrace house, the couple and their four children were having dinner downstairs.

When suddenly the electricity went  out, the father went to check upstairs only to find that a fire had broke out.

District Fire and Rescue station chief Mohd Safiq Mohd Noor said the station's operation personnel received the distress call at 10.07pm.

"With help from the Serdang station, there were 19 personnel altogether that was involved in the fire-fighting operation,"They arrived at the scene at 10.23pm,” Safiq said.

He added that the six victims got out safely although the blaze had started to invade the house's first floor minutes before the firemen arrived.

"Although we managed to douse the fire in 20 minutes, the house's second floor was completely burnt,

"It was believed that a short-circuit in one of the rooms upstairs was the cause," he said.

Think tank chief rushes home from Qatar due to house fire

KAJANG: Think tank head Wan Saiful Wan Jan was about to start a discussion at an international forum in Qatar when a call came in from his brother to say his home, near here, was in flames.

“It took a few moments to sink in. I did not know what to say,” said Wan Saiful, who was in the discussion group on the topic Preventing Economic Collapse and Promoting Inclusive Growth in Egypt and Tunisia at the 10th US-Islamic World Forum in Doha at around 3pm on Sunday.

Wan Saiful, the chief executive of the Institute of Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas), had hoped to have dinner with Afghan President Hamid Karzai later but aborted the plan and took the next flight home.

The fire razed most of the upper floor and roof of his double-storey house at Bandar Sungai Long.

“It started above the ceiling of the master bedroom, where the water heater was installed, and burnt most of the roof.

“Thankfully, no one was hurt,” he said, standing among the charred ruins of the upper floor yesterday.

Wan Saiful, who is a columnist with The Star, said his wife and four children were at home during the incident.

“My wife was carrying our seven-month-old son upstairs for his afternoon nap when she noticed the doorknob was warm. She saw smoke coming from under the door and quickly shouted to everyone to get out,” he said.

The Fire and Rescue Department deemed Wan Saiful's house unsafe and the family has to stay with relatives for the time being.

Despite the tragedy, Wan Saiful continues to maintain a positive outlook.

“The main thing is to get the kids back to school and then move on,” he said.

inShare KUALA LUMPUR: A furniture factory suffered losses than ran into tens of thousands when fire destroyed the factory situated in Bandar Teknologi Kajang, near here, at 7.16pm Monday. Kajang Fire and Rescue Department officer I, Hamzah Mohammad Shariff said after receiving a distress call at 7.20pm, the first fire engine was deployed to the scene immediately. "Six fire engines with 35 fire fighters from Semenyih, Bangi, Mantin and Kajang and assisted by a water tanker from Kuala Lumpur joined in the action to douse the fire. The fire was brought under control in an hour. "Also on hand to assist were eight volunteer fire fighters from Balakong and Hulu Langat," he told reporters when met at the scene. He said the fire was believed to have started from the mid section of the factory, measuring 8,000 sq metres, before spreading to other parts quickly. Hamzah said investigations are being carried out to determine the cause of the fire and estimated losses but fortunately no human casualties were reported.

Several explosions heard as fire razes LPG plant

SEMENYIH: Several explosions were heard as fire blazed through a liquefied petroleum gas bottling plant on Tuesday.

Witnesses said they saw gas cylinders flying into the air and exploding after the fire started at about 8.30pm.

The fire blasted the plant, razing it to the ground and gutting a nearby lorry which was also loaded with cylinders of gas used for cooking. A car and motorcycle was also found burnt.

Firemen put out the blaze by 10pm and there was no report of casualties or injuries, said Kajang OCPD ACP Abdul Rashid Wahab.

He said police were checking to see if the facility, which started operating about six weeks ago, had an operating license as it appeared to lack the basic of safety features.

Police were also looking for the operator of the plant who has gone missing, he said.

The entire area has been cordoned off as police and firemen check the ruins.
