Cops destroy gambling tools

The Star, Wednesday January 29, 2014

KAJANG: Police have destroyed 1,204 electronic gambling machines in an effort to clamp down on illegal gambling activities in the district.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab said a court order was issued for the destruction of the items.

“The machines were confiscated from various gambling dens in the district from 2011 to 2013. We have made 89 arrests within that period,” said ACP Abdul Rashid at the district station yesterday.

He added that strict action would be taken against operators, premises owners and caretakers under the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

MCA leaders slam Anwar for being selfish

The Star, Wednesday January 29, 2014

KAJANG: MCA leaders have hit out at PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, calling him a selfish person.

Hulu Langat MCA chief Lee Ban Seng said Anwar had no intention of serving the people nor the constituency.

“He is merely eyeing the (Selangor) Mentri Besar seat and has gone to the extent to order an elected representative to resign to pave way for him to try to enter the state assembly and eventually replace Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim as the MB if he wins.

“This is not fair for those who voted for Lee Chin Cheh,” he said.

The politician, who stood against Chin Cheh in a six-cornered fight in the 13th general election, said the by-election which would be conducted soon to fill the Kajang state seat vacated by Chin Cheh is meaningless and a waste of money and manpower.

It was reported that the Election Commission spent about half a million ringgit in the 2008 Permatang Pauh by-election in which Anwar won. The by-election was conducted following the resignation of Anwar’s wife Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.

A meeting on the selection of Barisan Nasional candidate for the Kajang seat, traditionally held by the MCA, would take place soon.

Selangor Wanita MCA chief Ong Chong Swen urged Chin Cheh to come out and explain his resignation to the people.

“Come out and tell whether you are incapable of serving the people or forced to resign to make way for a ‘capable’ leader,” she said.

Ong, who is also the wing’s national vice-chairman, said Pakatan Rakyat was not treating the people’s mandate seriously by allowing its elected representative to resign just like that.

MCA Youth national chairman Chong Sin Woon said it was incorrect and improper for PKR to resolve the power tussles in such a manner.

“This is a clear indication that PKR and Pakatan have lied to the people by telling that their paramount concern is the people’s interests,” said Chong, who is also the state Youth chief.

At a time when the cost of living is rising, he added that the by-election is an abuse of the democratic process and a waste of public funds.

PSM to contest Kajang by-election?

The Malay Mail, 28 January 2014

Secretary-general gen S Arutchelvan is in the running as he fulfills the party's criteria

PETALING JAYA: PKR should not discount the possibility that the Kajang by-election will be a crowded field.

PSM is mulling contesting the seat after receiving backing from youth NGOs who are fed up with the current situation in the PKR-led Selangor government.

“PSM has received numerous calls to contest the Kajang seat but we have not decide anything yet.

The youth NGOs think that we should be the third choice in the by-election.

“Party president Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim has called for a meeting to discuss the calls,” PSM secretary-general S Arutchelvan told FMT today.

According to Arutchelvan, PSM is actively serving the people of Kajang.

“We have set the criteria for any PSM candidate to contest an election, and he must have served the constituency for at least five years.

“We have candidates (who match the criteria set by the party) as we’ve been active in Kajang,” he added.

No decision yet

Arutchelvan also did not deny speculation that he will be nominated by PSM, adding that he is eligible.

“There are a lot of speculations that I would contest but we have not decided on anything. For the Kajang state seat, based on party’s criteria, I’m eligible,” he said.

In the 13th General Election (GE13), PKR first timer, Lee Chin Cheh, won the Kajang state seat by defeating five other candidates, including three independents.

Lee gained 19,571 votes, a 6,824 majority followed by BN’s Lee Ban Seng (12,747); Berjasa’s Mohamad Ismail (1,014), Independents Ir Mohd Iwan Jeffrey Abdul Majid (249), Ong Yau Foo (85) and Mohd Khalid Kassim (83).

Based on this trend, PKR should not discount the possibility that independents candidates can turn out to be spoilers in this third by-election after GE13.

Arutchelvan  lost the Semenyih state seat, just outside Kajang, in the last general election under the PSM banner as PKR decided not to cave in to PSM plea  to let them have a straight contest with BN candidate Johan Abd Aziz.

In 2008, Arutchelvan lost the seat narrowly to Johan under the PKR banner, but PKR decison to nominated Hamidi A Hassan in May 2013 resulting in Johan winning the seat with a 4,145 majority votes. Hamidi gained 13,471 votes followed by Arutchelvan with 5,568 votes.

Kajang folk feel they’re being manipulated

The Star, Wednesday January 29, 2014

PETALING JAYA: Kajang folk were upset over PKR’s move to trigger a by-election for their constituency.

Resident Chen Chooi Har said Kajang did not need the hassle of a by-election nor did she want Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to contest here.

“I feel we are being manipulated, just because they want to topple (Tan Sri) Khalid Ibrahim,” said the 37-year-old freelance writer.

Sathyaseelan Tharmalingam said the real losers in this issue were the people of Kajang.

“The councillors in the Kajang Municipal Council are not performing, the council is not looking into our problems, and now the assemblyman has resigned with no satisfactory reason given,” said the Taman Reko Sentral resident.

Ramana Ramakrishnan said Lee Chin Cheh had abused the public’s trust and should have completed his term.

“It would be acceptable if he resigned due to ill health but not for political reasons,” said the 42-year-old programme manager.

Resident Yong Swan Khong of Taman Setia in Sungai Chua, felt that Lee was irresponsible to leave after barely a year in office.

“He owes it to the people here and we expect him to do something for our community,” added Yong.

R.K Subra pointed out that Anwar travelled abroad frequently and would not be an effective assemblyman.

“Is he contesting for the people of Kajang? Does he spend enough time with the people of Permatang Pauh?” asked the 63-year-old senior lecturer.

Raj Mani Rao said they wanted an assemblyman who would serve the people rather than their own agenda. He said Kajang was not a rural constituency and they did not take kindly to being used as pawns.

“They are playing a game and treating the public like fools,” said the 42-year-old college lecturer.

One Kajang PKR member described the decision by a select few in the top leadership as condescending.

“Besides Azmin Ali and Khalid, PKR has 13 other assemblymen in Selangor. Yet they couldn’t find someone else to appoint as Mentri Besar,” he said.

“Barisan Nasional is sure to field a local candidate and PKR cannot expect a thumping victory.”

However, Taman Ramal Suria residents association chairman Hafiz Hanafi said the people would stand behind any leader who could do their job well.

“At the end of the day, as residents of Kajang, we want leaders who will be able to represent us and focus on our problems,” he said.

Anwar is Pakatan's Kajang state seat candidate

The Star, Tuesday January 28, 2014

PETALING JAYA: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will contest the Kajang state seat in the upcoming by-election.

In a packed press conference at the PKR headquarters on Tuesday, Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim announced Anwar's candidacy for the state seat.

Asked if he agreed to Anwar running in the by-election, Khalid said: "If I did not agree, I would not be here."

Winning a state seat will enable Anwar to join the Selangor Legislative Assembly and take over the top job.

The N25 Kajang seat had fallen vacant following the sudden resignation of Kajang assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh on Monday.

Selangor Speaker Hannah Yeoh confirmed  that Lee Chin Cheh, who is from PKR, had resigned his state seat. Lee handed in his letter at 3pm after meeting Anwar two hours earlier — paving the way for a by-election in Kajang.

It will be the second time a by-election is held to accommodate the Permatang Pauh MP.

His wife, Datin Seri Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, stepped down as Permatang Pauh MP on July 31, 2008 and a by-election was held on Aug 26.

At the time, Wan Azizah was Opposition Leader.  Anwar won and was sworn into Parliament on Aug 28, taking over as the Opposition Leader.

Kajang rep quits to pave way for Anwar?

Free Malaysia Today, 27 January 2014

The plan to replace Selangor MB with Anwar gains momentum with Kajang rep stepping down.

PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Kajang state rep Lee Chin Cheh has tendered his resignation letter to the Selangor state assembly speaker earlier today, party sources told FMT.

The sources said this was to pave the way for PKR’s de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim to contest in the ensuing by-election, and then to become the new Selangor Menteri Besar if he wins the by-election.

This is the party’s plan to solve the long-standing power struggle between incumbent MB Khalid Ibrahim and his nemesis Azmin Ali, who is the state PKR chief.

While no one in PKR is ready to confirm the plan, sources told FMT that senior leaders in the party have agreed to it. PAS is also said to have approved Anwar as the new MB.

However the question remains if the Selangor Sultan would approve it.

In another development, state speaker Hannah Yeoh is expected to hold a press conference later today.

Khalid’s office meanwhile told FMT earlier that he was not resigning from his post.

Lee could not be contacted for comment at press time.

Khalid is expected to announce his decision to go this Wednesday, according to party insiders.

Khalid, who has been under heavy fire from his party over his mishandling of the PKNS issue and the JAIS bible raid, agreed to the dramatic move at a meeting with Anwar on Sunday.

Urgent discussions are still taking place behind the scenes but Anwar is believed to have secured the endorsement of his DAP and PAS partners for the changeover.

The developments are coming on the heels of Anwar’s olive branch offer Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to find national consensus on various issues confronting Malaysians.

Residents are better informed now that local councils use social media

The Star, Tuesday January 21, 2014

MPSp posts photos of their recent events on its page to keep users updated.
MPSp posts photos of their recent events on its page to keep users updated.
THE Internet has made communication so easy and most people, both young and old, are using it to disseminate information, find information and generally stay informed.

Local councils in Selangor have also joined the social media bandwagon to interact better with residents under their jurisdiction using Facebook.

The councils can post updates, upcoming events and announcements on their Facebook page, and their followers would be updated on the latest activities.

In turn, the followers use the platform to air complaints.

However, the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) Facebook page contains postings by the public airing their s frustrations over the council’s services.

User Shaharuddin Abu Kassim has urged MPKj to be more firm with the contractors, saying:“Please monitor the garbage contractor in Taman Muhibbah Kajang. The contractors did not follow the rubbish collection schedule. Last week from Dec 2 to 7 collected twice. This week Dec 9 until Dec 14 collected once. MPKj officers please be firm with the contractors involved.”

MBPJ includes newspaper clippings on their Facebook page to keep followers up-to-date with current happenings.
MBPJ includes a page of newspaper clippings to keep followers up- to- date with current happenings. Based on StarMetro’s observation, most of the postings were about rubbish collection by MPKj contractors.

Another user, Shamsudin Abu Bakar said rubbish collection services should be improved.

When contacted, MPKj public relations head Kamarul Izlan Sulaiman said the Facebook page is under the IT department, with the Corporate Planning and Public Relations Department supplying information to be posted on the page.

He said that complaints received would be forwarded to the respective department for action to be taken.

Kamarul said the Facebook page aimed to disseminate information on events and important announcements to the public, and not for complaints.

“Social media such as Facebook and Twitter are a great platform for this and reaches a wider audience,” he said.

The MPKj Facebook page currently has 2,253 “Likes”.

Kamarul said the public should use the proper channels to make complaints.

They can call MPKj Hotline at 1-800-88-6755 and the Garbage Complaint Hotline at 1-800-88-1144.
They could also email their complaints to aduan@mpkj.gov.my or log on to the Selangor Residents Online Complaints System (STARS) at adu-mpkj.selangor.gov.my/

Other local councils have their own way of handling comments and complaints made on their Facebook pages.

However, the councils also stressed that users should direct their complaints to the hotline numbers or by using STARS.

Sepang Municipal Council (MPSp) president Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said the council holds a weekly meeting to discuss the complaints received on their Facebook page. “We do not always get complaints on the page. But when we do, we ensure we act on it,” he said.

As for the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), its public relations officer Zainun Zakaria said she responded to the comments made by the public.

“I also forward complaints received to the relevant departments,” she said, adding that they received two or three complaints a month on Facebook.

“Most residents prefer to use STARS as then complaints go straight to the departments concerned and is more effective,” said Zainun.

MBPJ also uses the Facebook to keep the public informed about happenings in the city.

“It is good to keep residents updated, not only on events but also current happenings,” said Zainun.

Meanwhile, Subang Jaya Municipal Council (MPSJ) public relations senior assistant director Asfarizal Abdul Rashid said Facebook is used as a tool to spread news faster.

Asfarizal said MPSJ Facebook has reached 2,674 likes up until December.

“All the updated news will immediately reach users and the news is spread faster and more efficiently,” he said, adding that MPSJ also responds to questions or complaints received.

“Every question and complaint posted on Facebook will be addressed,” he said.

Terror bus ride for student

Free Malaysia Today, January 20, 2014

A short bus ride between the commuter terminal and home turned sour for a local hair dressing saloon student when he was robbed by two men.

KUALA LUMPUR: The incident happened on Jan 9, around 8pm, when J D Yeo, 18, boarded a mini bus at the Kajang Commuter Station and was on the way home in Taman Reko Jaya, a 1 km ride.

A police report regarding the incident was made but to date there has been no feedback from the authorities, instigating Yeo to seek help from the Gerakan public service and complaints bureau chief Wilson Lau Hoi Keong.

Yeo did not suspect anything when boarding the bus packed with almost 20 passengers.

“When I entered the bus, two men followed and told the passengers that ‘all non-Muslims, give (us) all your belongings’.

“Expecting danger, I tried to exit the bus but they blocked me and pushed me to the back. One man, who was armed with a butcher’s knife pointed it at my chest while the other kicked my private parts before taking all my belongings,” Yeo said in a press conference at the Gerakan office today.

“It happened very fast, in 5 minutes they managed to take all my belongings. An Indian lady was also robbed of all her belongings.

“Luckily, a passenger took pity on me and guided me to lodge a police report,” he added.

Yeo said that he suspected the bus driver might be in cahoots with the robbers as the driver has declined to cooperate.

“The incident inItialy took place at the front of the bus, near the driver.

“When I tried to get the driver’s details, he refused to give it to me and said that he saw nothing,” said Yeo, adding that the robbers even thanked the bus driver when they got off.

Yeo claims the incident has left him traumatized and he now avoids using the bus when he needs to go for his classes.

“I just walk all the way to the commuter station,” he said.

He also fears for his safety as the robbers have his address and house-keys.

“Lately, I have noticed that a motorcycle is always patrolling my neighborhood and one person on the bike resembles one of the suspects,” added Yeo.

The Gerakan public service and complaints bureau chief Wilson Lau Hoi Keong said that he will write to the bus company today demanding an answer as to whether a police report has been lodged by them.

“So far, the bus driver himself did not lodge a police report.

“The driver should report the incident to the company, and the company should have lodged a police report as it is a public security threat.

“If not, the incident will be repeated and made easy for such robbers to prey on their next victim,” Wilson said.

Wilson added that he will liaise with the investigating police officer handling the case.

Yeo lost close to RM2,000 including his smart phone, wallet and his hair clippers set used for hair dressing course.

Dengue cases skyrocket

The Star, Saturday January 25, 2014

KAJANG: There has been an alarming rise in dengue cases in the country – more than three times the number recorded over the same period last year.

As of Wednesday, a total of 6,155 cases were reported, an increase of 243% over the same period in 2013.

The number of deaths has also doubled, with 10 reported so far compared with only five in January last year.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam said Selangor had the most number of dengue cases with 3,168, making up 51% of the total number of cases.
“Two of the 10 deaths were in the Hulu Langat district,” he told reporters after a visit to dengue hotspots here yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya recorded 666 and 502 cases respectively. There were 333 cases in Negri Sembilan, Malacca (241), Kelantan (173), Penang (166), Sabah (110), Terengganu (100), Sarawak (85), Kedah (66), Pahang (53) and Perlis (20).

He said the sharp increase of cases was worrying and urged the public to be more vigilant in ensuring homes and surroundings were not breeding grounds for Aedes mosquitos.

“Generally, people are highly aware of the dangers of dengue but they tend to overlook places that may turn out to be Aedes breeding grounds,” he said.

The latest figures indicate that the rise in dengue infections might be worse this year, if efforts to destroy the Aedes mosquitoes were not intensified,

A total of 43,346 cases were recorded last year, with 92 deaths.

“Selangor had the highest number of cases with 23,852 or 55% with 25 deaths,” Dr Subramaniam said, adding that Petaling, Hulu Langat and Gombak districts had been categorised as dengue hotspots.

More than four million premises were checked nationwide and about 15,000 compounds were issued amounting to RM7.7mil.

“The ministry will step up its efforts, particularly in dengue hotspots through its on-going Ops Gempur Aedes, to destroy mosquito breeding grounds,” said Dr Subramaniam.

“From Jan 1 to 22, about 168,000 premises were checked nationwide and 411 compounds were issued with the fines amounting to RM205,500,” he said.

the measures being taken to address the dengue menace includes biological control using Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (a type of bacteria) spray to kill mosquito larvae.

“We will use more temephos spray (a pesticide) to kill larvae and adult mosquitos, and autocidal traps (a new method to trap and kill larvae and mosquitos),” he said.

The ministry’s Vector Borne Disease Sector head Dr Rose Nani Mudin told The Star that the increase in dengue cases was due to various factors.

“Of late, there have been more cases globally and the disease is being spread faster because of human mobility.

“Another factor is the weather. Rainwater collected in rubbish bins, even as little as one teaspoonful, is enough for Aedes mosquito to breed,” she said.

Dr Rose said about 70% of Aedes breeding grounds were in residential areas as the mosquitos were attracted to highly populated areas.

Health Ministry Takes Drastic Measures To Stem Dengue - Subramaniam

KAJANG, Jan 24 (Bernama) -- Beginning this week, the health ministry will take drastic measures to stem the spread of dengue when it introduces three new methods, said minister, Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam.

He said the methods comprise the spraying of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) spaces, temephos spraying (Abate 500E) and autocidal trap to trap and kill the mosquito larva and mosquitoes.

He said the methods would initially be used in the Petaling district of Selangor.

"Last year, Petaling district recorded the highest number of dengue cases, accounting for 22 per cent of the total 23,852 cases in Selangor, and 55 per cent of the 43,346 cases nationwide."

Dr Subramaniam said this at a media conference after visiting a dengue 'hotspot' in the vicinity of the Kajang main market here today.

He said 6,155 dengue cases were reported nationwide from Jan 1-22, this year, involving 10 deaths.

This was an increase of 4,363 cases or 243 per cent as compared to only 1,792 cases for the same period last year, at five deaths.

Selangor reported 3,168 cases, accounting for 51 per cent of the total cases nationwide during the same period, with Hulu Langat district reporting 936 cases, including two deaths or 15 per cent of cases in the state.

Meanwhile, Dr Subramaniam, who is also MIC deputy president, declined to comment on newly-appointed MIC treasurer-general Datuk R. Ramanan, who was ordered by the High Court yesterday to return RM5.5 million to psychiatrist Tan Sri Dr M. Mahadevan.

"The issue depends on party president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel to make a decision," he said.

Abusive stepmother stuffs chili powder into girl’s mouth, private parts

The New Straits Times, 7 Jan 2014

KAJANG: An 11-year old girl was believed to have been subjected to horrific abuse by her stepmother, who allegedly stuffed chili powder into the girl’s mouth and private parts.

The incident allegedly took place in full view of the girl’s two younger siblings and ailing grandmother at their home in Beranang on Saturday.

The 31-year-old suspect was arrested at the house in Tasik Kesuma after the girl’s aunt lodged a report  the same day.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Ab Rashid Ab Wahab said, several hours after the excruciating torture, the girl went to her aunt's house nearby and told her.

"As the victim's siblings were only three and five years old, and the grandmother was very old and weak, nobody could stop the suspect.

“We are attempting to trace the victim’s father, who has been away for several days,” he said.

Police believe that the abuse had been going on for sometime as the girl’s body was riddled with burn marks.

Rashid said a burnt spoon, believed to have been used in the abuse, was found in the house’s kitchen.

The suspect, a housewife, was remanded for three days. An extension application was filed this morning, said Rashid.

The girl is currently receiving treatment for her severe injuries and trauma at the Kajang Hospital.
The case is investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act for  causing physical injury.

Teen lodges police report after four years of rape by step-grandfather

The Star, Saturday January 4, 2014

KUALA LUMPUR: After four years of being raped repeatedly by her step-grandfather, a plucky 15-year-old decided that enough was enough.

The teen left her home in Sungai Chua and lodged a police report by herself at the Kajang police station Friday morning.

The 68-year-old man was arrested soon after and is being remanded for seven days by the police.

Kajang OCPD ACP Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab said the girl and her two brothers (aged seven and 11) were orphans.

"The girl's father passed away when she was just four and her mother remarried another man, and came to live with her step family and the suspect.

"Then the girl's mother passed away two years ago due to an illness. The girl and the brothers were left in the care of their stepfather and step-grandparents," he said.

ACP Abdul Rashid said the suspect would wait until he was alone at home with the teenager.

"He would lock himself and the girl inside her room and would rape her. The girl never said anything to her family, friends or teachers because he was the one taking care of her and had no where else to go," he said.

He said police would be recording statements from the victim's brothers, stepmother and step-grandmother.

The case is being investigated under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape.

PETALING JAYA: The search for a 11-year-old boy feared drowned in Cheras continued as the district Fire and Rescue station beefed up efforts to track him down.

District station chief Safiq Noor said they had new leads on where the boy, Salman Mokhtar, could be found.

“We have received a report from a witness who saw him in a river in the nearby town of Sungai Chua in Kajang,” he said.

Safiq said based on this information, the district station had set up a control centre at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and would concentrate its search efforts in Sungai Langat.

However, he said it could only continue its search effort Sunday as river currents were currently strong.

It is learnt that additional manpower would be recruited from nearby fire and rescue departments to assist in the rescue mission.

“We will continue our search efforts until the boy is found,” said Safiq.

Salman was reportedly crossing a small drain along Jalan Suasana 2/7 in Bandar Tun Hussein Onn at 4.30pm on Friday when he slipped and fell into it.

Rescuers from the Kajang fire station were the first to respond following an emergency call at 4.45pm.

He is presumed to have been washed away and rescuers have been combing the drainage system to find him.
