Soil erosion at Ampang Lookout Point worrying

Danger lurks: Part of the slope at the Ampang Lookout point is facing erosion. Danger lurks: Part of the slope at the Ampang Lookout point is facing erosion.

PART of the slope at the Ampang Lookout Point (ALOP) in Jalan Ampang-Hulu Langat has eroded.
When StarMetro reached the site around 11am yesterday, it was observed that there was soil movement in the vicinity.

Road barriers have been placed along the road to prevent sand from spilling over to the road and a sign was placed to warn motorists of the erosion.

A Hulu Langat Public Works Department (PWD) officer at the site said they were notified about the erosion on Tuesday at around 3pm.

“It was raining that day. There are still soil movements. We we are monitoring the area to determine the next step. We are worried if it rains as it will further worsen the situation.

“There are trees along the slope that add to the risk if there are further erosions,” he said.

When contacted, an officer from the Hulu Langat Public Works Department said that cleaning works were carried out and declined to comment further.

ALOP is currently vacant as the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) instructed restaurant owners there to vacate the premises and issued a closure order on Jan 18.

In a StarMetro’s Aug 8, 2011 report titled “Danger lurks beneath tourist attraction”, a large crack was found in a corner of the original ALOP structure and the floor area.

The report also stated that the slope below the supporting pillars of the structure was unstable following a minor landslip.

Signs of another larger landslip, covered in cement, were also spotted on the steep slope below the team-building facility at ALOP.

MPKj could not be contacted for comments as both the council president Datuk Hassan Nawawi Abdul Rahman and engineering department head Md Noor Mahmud were overseas.
