MPKj: Homestays need business licence to operate

Saturday May 30, 2015

HOMESTAY owners in areas under the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) will have to apply for a business licence.

MPKj president Mohd Sayuthi Bakar announced this during the council’s fullboard meeting yesterday.

He said there were a number of homestay operators in Hulu Langat, which is a recreational area well known for its waterfalls and rivers.

“The move is to ensure that we can monitor the activities at these homestay properties,” he explained.
He added that there might be illegal activities at the homestay that the council was not aware of.

“If they have business licence, at least we will have a database in case anything happens,” said Mohd Sayuthi.

The licensing exercise is still in its planning stage and Mohd Sayuthi hopes to implement it by next year.

“We do not have an exact figure of how many homestay businesses are in the area, but we will set up a committee to find out,” he added.

During the meeting, Mohd Sayuthi also said that stern action would be taken against land owners who let their unoccupied land become an illegal dumping ground.

“MPKj will work with the land office to identify the land owners.

“We will issue notice to the owners to rectify the situation.

“If they fail to do so, the land office will seize the land,” he said.

He revealed that from January to May, 61 lorries were confiscated in an operation to curb illegal dumping.

MPKj has also identified eight illegal dumping hotspots which are in Twin Palm Sungai Long, Cheras; Desa Bukit Cahaya, Cheras; Kampung Sungai Balak, Kajang; Jalan Kuari, Sungai Serai; Batu 14, Hulu Langat; Villaraya Industrial Park, Semenyih; Kampung Sungai Ramal, Kajang; and Kampung Bangi Lama, Bangi.

MENTION Kajang and one of the first things that will hit your mind is satay.

Satay or sate (skewered meat) has gained regional and possibly global recognition as a popular Javanese dish.

Sate Kajang is particularly popular as the meat chunks are considerably bigger and meatier than usual. The perfect combination of thick and creamy peanut sauce with a tinge of dry chili paste keeps you hankering for more.

If you are up for a little gastronomical adventure, head over to Stadium Kajang this Saturday (May 30) where satay makers will collectively be gearing to make it into the Malaysia Book of Records for the Longest Satay Grilling Line in the country.

About 50,000 satay sticks will be grilled at one go and given away for free.

The event is being held in conjunction with the biennial “Karnival 1001 Rasa Sate Kajang” by the Kajang Municipal Council.

This year, the carnival — held from May 29-30, from 8.30am to 11.30pm — presents an opportunity for families to gather and have fun.

Among other programmes that will take place during the three-day carnival include soap-carving competition (May 31), Satay and Ketupat Crafting Competition (May 31) and Photography Competition, open to all.

Themed “Sate Oh Sate”, photographers can select their best shots according to the theme, to be submitted to the organiser (Akademi Fotografi Multimedia) on site by May 31. Participants stand a chance to win cash prizes of up to RM500.

There are several activities for children as well, organised by the Selangor Public Library Corporation, including a game of scrabble (Sahibba), reading corners, colouring competition and poetry recital competition.

Walkabouts encouraged for district police chiefs, station heads

The Sun, 26 May 2015

KAJANG: District police chiefs and heads of stations must often carry out walkabouts to meet the communities to impart confidence to the public over security aspects.

Selangor police chief Datuk Abdul Samah Mat said the initiative would boost cordial communication between the two parties, in line with the aspirations of the Royal Malaysian Police to foster ties with the communities.

"We can boost ties with the communities during the meetings so they know policemen are their friends who are always concerned about their security," he told reporters after a friendly visit to several locations here yesterday.

Earlier, Abdul Samah, accompanied by several Selangor policemen, including members of the Women Peace Squad of Kajang, took a commuter from the Serdang commuter station to the Kajang commuter station.

They then walked two kilometres to the Kajang Morning Market to meet traders and the public. – Bernama

ALL development projects in Selangor must adhere to the prescribed guidelines before they can be approved, said Mentri Besar Azmin Ali.

He added the local authorities must ensure conditions laid out in the Guidelines and Selangor State Planning Standards Manual are followed before approving any project.

“However, stakeholders are allowed to voice their disagreements,” Azmin said when asked to comment on protests against the construction of a 36-storey service apartment some 100m away from the SMKA Maahad Hamidiah in Sungai Ramal Luar, Kajang.

He said this at the International Conference of Malay Archipelago Scholars 2015 held at the International Islamic University College Selangor.

The manual was prepared by the state Town and Country Planning Department and provides complete and comprehensive guidelines for the administration and management of planning and development in Selangor.

SMKA Maahad Hamidiah PTA chairman Jazlan Ahmad claimed that the project did not adhere to the guidelines.

“By right, this type of project should be in a central zone, near transport terminals, higher education institutions and urban redevelopment areas,” Jazlan was quoted as saying.

When contacted, Kajang Municipal Council Public Relations head Kamarul Izlan Sulaiman said the council was still looking into the matter.

“The technical team is reviewing the matter and a report will be prepared soon,” he said.
