Shell Helix helps welfare centre in Kajang

The Sun, 24 March 2016

SHELL Helix teamed up with one of its key distributors, Sin Leong Seng Motor Sdn Bhd, to lend a helping hand to Persatuan Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Kajang Selangor (PKIK).
Together, they are sponsoring free oil change services for PKIK’s three vans; a 1997 Mazda E1400, a 2006 Toyota Hiace and a 2012 Foton View; for one year using Shell Helix lubricants that are designed to clean, rejuvenate and protect engines.
The Shell Helix team, led by Leslie Ng, general manager of Shell Lubricants (Malaysia and Singapore) and Kong Kin Lay, managing director of Sin Leong Seng Motor, recently paid a visit to PKIK to bring the good news to the staff and clients who comprised children and adults with learning disabilities.
“We are delighted to step up to help ease the financial burden of maintaining the three vehicles, which needed to be always in tip-top condition to ferry staff and clients. PKIK can now have total peace of mind by sending their vehicles to an authorised Shell Helix-branded workshop in Kajang for their regular maintenance services. The costs will be borne by Sin Leong Seng Motor and us,” said Ng.
The sponsorship was made possible with cash contributions and also funds from the sale of used bottle caps accumulated from 4-litre Shell Helix packs in recent marketing campaigns, including the Malaysia Book of Records-breaking Shell Love My Ride Festival in June 2015.
PKIK director, Kong Lan Lee said, “We are thankful for this initiative by Shell Helix as every sen counts, especially when we are raising funds for the construction of our own building. It is another weight off our shoulders.”
PKIK is currently operating from five separate rented shoplots and hopes to begin construction of their own building this year for which some RM3 million more is needed.
During the visit, the Shell Helix team was able to see first-hand how the care and guidance provided by the dedicated staff at PKIK, which was established more than 20 years ago, have helped some of the residents excel.
Among them were Darien Lum, 21, and Rosabel Sebastian, 30. Both did Malaysia proud at the 2015 Special Olympics World Games in Los Angeles where 7,000 participants from around the world competed. Darien won gold medals in the 100-metre and long jump events while Rosabel brought home the silver medal in the 200-metre sprint.
“Our main focus is to equip every child or adult here with life skills. This can be very challenging as some are totally dependent and may have very testing behaviours that needed to be modified. Darien and Rosabel have shown that they can be successful when given the right guidance,” she added.
For the Shell Helix team, it was a priceless experience and privilege to be able to spend some time to interact and bring smiles to the PKIK clients with special needs. Aside from the sponsorship, they had brought along provisions and water bottles to be given out.
“We are glad to do our part in impacting and touching lives by a simple act of kindness. The smiles on their faces and the warm welcome made the visit all the more memorable,” said (Sin Leong Seng Motor’s) Kong.

Two more held over threats against district officer

The Sun, 21 March 2016

KAJANG: Police arrested another two suspects today over a threat made against a Hulu Langat assistant district officer who received bullets and had molotov cocktails hurled into his government quarters in Bandar Baru Bangi on Thursday.
It is believed that the suspects who are allegedly involved in illegal sand mining in the district were arrested by a special task force from the Selangor police headquarters today morning.
A 45-year-old suspect was held in Taman Tasik Ria, Kajang, while another suspect, aged 49, was held in Sungai Long, near Kajang.
The raiding party had also found sand mining equipment in the possession of the suspects.
Selangor police CID chief DCP Datuk Mohd Adnan Abdullah said the latest arrest brings the total of those held in connection with the case to five.
"They are under remand and we are questioning them to ascertain their involvement. We expect to make many more arrests and we will soon reveal the outcome of our investigations." he told theSun.
It is learnt that police are confident of solving the case and bringing the culprits to book.
A massive clampdown on illegal sand mining in the district is believed to have led to syndicates behind the business to post threats to the 35-year-old assistant district officer.
The officer who was resolute in exposing sand theft since he was posted for duty almost two years ago was taken aback early on Thursday when he found three molotov cocktails and a packet containing seven bullets at the porch and compound of his house.
He also revealed that it was not the first time he had received threats to his life and had lodged 10 police reports after being intimidated since he started work here.
The case is being investigated for criminal intimidation and other offences under the Firearms Act.

KUALA LUMPUR: Well-known composer and lyricist Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan died today at Selayang Hospital. He was 57.

Malaysian Artistes Association (Seniman) secretary-general, Hafiz Nafiah said Adnan died about 2.15am (Friday) from complications of several ailments.

"The association expresses its condolences to the family...may his soul be placed among the pious," he told Bernama.

The funeral prayers were held at Al-Falah Mosque in Sungai Ramal Dalam, Kajang before burial at the Tanah Perkuburan Islam Kariah Sungai Ramal Dalam, Kajang at 10am, Friday.

Adnan had written hit songs for artistes including Datuk Siti Nurhaliza (Jerat Percintaan).

Adnan received the 'Anugerah Wirama' at the 17th Music Industry Awards ceremony in 2010.

In KAJANG, Adnan's wife Rozinor Hafiza Mohd Fauzi, 38, said he seemed quieter after being admitted to the hospital's intensive care unit on Wednesday evening.

"He did not say anything until his last breath about 2.15am...if I woke him up, he would just shed tears," she recalled.

Rozinor married Adnan in 2009 and they have no children together. Adnan had three children from his previous marriage.

1Malaysia Artistes Foundation chairman Datuk DJ Dave said Adnan's passing was a great loss to the country's music industry.

DJ Dave said he was a talented composer and had written several hit ballads including 'Memori Cinta Luka' by Nassier Wahab and 'Bunga-Bunga Cinta' by Misha Omar.

"His passing was shocking because I just visited him yesterday at the hospital and he was in stable condition although he was unconscious," he said.
One of Adnan's proteges, famous singer Samihah Aisah Omar or better known as Misha Omar, described him as her second father who had helped her a lot during her early days in the entertainment scene about 15 years ago.

"My first single 'Bunga-Bunga Cinta' was composed by Adnan and I did not expect the song would bring good luck to my career," she said.

Another singer Mohd Nassier Abd Wahab or popularly known as Nassier Wahab, said Adnan was a very nice man to be working with.

A CALL is going out to all former students of SMK Tinggi Kajang, also known as Kajang High School, to come together for the school’s 100th anniversary celebration in 2019.
Well before the big event, an old boys’ reunion dinner will be held on April 2 at 6pm on the school’s grounds.
The school, which was incepted in 1919, has a rich history and its British architecture including a clock tower, has stood the test of time.
Today, the school has 147 teachers and 1,147 students.
Principal Nik Mat Nik Man, who will be retiring this year, felt that there was a need for his successor, with the help of the Education Ministry, to preserve the school’s heritage.
“The school has more that 100 artefacts in its archive room, including pictures of a Japanese soldiers’ hideout hole, which was found in the school field,” he said, adding that the hole had since been closed off by the Royal Malaysian Army.

“In 1930, the school was officiated by Sultan Alaiddin Sulaiman Shah of Selangor.
“The school was then moved from its original site to the present 11.3ha land 11 years later.
“During the Japanese occupation in Malaya from 1941 to 1945, the school building was the headquarters of the Japanese Army known as ‘Toa Seinen Gakko’,” he said.
It later became the first teacher training college.
“The old clock tower and fire hydrant, which still stand today, are remnants of British colonial times,” he said.
Nik Mat added that many former students now teach at the school.
“It will be difficult to gather all the old boys for the big occasion, that is why we are doing it in stages,’’ he said.

SMK Tinggi Kajang is known for its sports teams such as football and cricket and excellence in academic achievement for STPM in Selangor, receiving the STPM Highest Achievement Award in Selangor for 2013 and 2014.
The Finance Ministry has given the school a budget of RM560,000 to build an outdoor court while the Education Ministry has approved about RM1mil for the school to upgrade its field.
Billy Lee, an old boy who is now a teacher at the school, said he was very proud to be a former student of the school and had returned to serve his alma mater.
“As a student, I did not imagine that I would come back to teach here.
“It is fulfilling to teach English in a school that I have many fond memories of growing up.
“When I was schooling here, my friend and I were out looking for firewood one day in 1973 and he fell into the Japanese soldier’s hideout hole – he was lucky he did not get hurt,” he said, adding that when the army entered the site, live ammunition was found underground.

“There is so much historical value in this school and it must be preserved for the future generations to appreciate.
“We hope that the former students will come forward to show their support and catch up on old times,’’ said Lee, adding that the school was also building a database on former students.

MPKj plans to consolidate disposal of industrial waste

The Star, Tuesday, 1 March 2016

BY FARAH FAZANNA ZULZAHA

KAJANG Municipal Council (MPKj) is in talks with factory associations to hire the council’s contractors to collect and dispose of their industrial waste.
MPKj president Mohd Sayuthi Bakar said factories usually hire their own contractors and they could not control where these contractors dispose of the waste.
“We are planning to have a pilot project in the industrial area in Balakong and hope to start in June,” he told reporters after chairing the full board meeting yesterday.
He added that the move is to control how and where the waste is disposed.
“This is so we can avoid contractors dumping industrial waste in illegal dumpsites,” he said. As for the fees, he said the contractors hired by MPKj will quote a price based on the amount of waste produced by the factories.
“Each factory will have to pay a different amount, according to how much waste they produce and it could be cheaper than hiring their own contractors,” he said.
However, he added that the project will take time to materialise as they need to give the factory owners time to agree with the suggestion.
“If more than 50% of the factories agree to hire our contractors, then we will start with the project,” he said.
He added that there will be a committee consisting of representatives from the factory associations and MPKj to monitor the contractors.
