CHRISTMAS: Let's make merry in Kajang

The New Straits Times, 22 December 2011

CHRISTMAS: Let's make merry in Kajang

I WAS very pleased when it was announced that the national Christmas open house will be held at Kajang High School in Kajang, Selangor, on Dec 26.

Christmas
The bustling town of Kajang eagerly awaits your arrival for Christmas.
The honour given to Kajang to host this national  event is truly a reflection of the importance and significance of Kajang, which is strategically situated near Putrajaya, Cyberjaya and  Kuala Lumpur.
As a resident of Kajang, born, bred and educated here, I perceive this gathering will give   residents the opportunity to mingle and to know their fellow friends living in this vicinity apart from the thousands who will be coming from other places to join this joyous occasion here.
This town was once perceived as a quiet and a sleepy town and   known only for its satay,  which still draw  many to this day.
But the town has undergone tremendous  changes in the last two decades and today, it  is a "small metropolitan city" in its own right.
Apart from the unwelcome flood recently, this town is peaceful, which attracts many people  to buy property here.
With the creation of new housing estates, extending right to the corridors of Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur, Kajang is blooming with new residents coming in, adding colour, life and vibrancy around the town.
Several universities are situated in or around the town with two well-known public universities, UKM and UPM, and several private colleges and universities as well, which draw students from all over the country and overseas.
Not only am  I  delighted  that this celebration is in Kajang, but more significantly, it will be held in Kajang High School, where I  received my  secondary education, beginning in 1967.
As a former student,  I am delighted to return to the school for the Christmas celebration.
I can still remember the many friends, teachers and administrators, canteen operators, school guards, gardeners, laboratory assistants, among others, who walked into my life and had an effect in my life in different ways.
Since its early days, Kajang High School has produced governors and politicians for the country, corporate figures and businessmen, and is a school where students of all races can be found even to this day.  My hope is that the school will continue its rich tradition of producing brilliant students for the country and where students are "molded and fashioned" for the market place.
Students should be taught that for any nation to become successful, peace and harmony are paramount.
I extend my welcome to those from other places to the town. Drive carefully   to arrive in Kajang safe and sound for the celebration.  To the Christians of Kajang, I would encourage a full turn out to join our friends of other faiths and beliefs in Kajang and elsewhere who are coming for the national Christmas open house and to make it a truly 1Malaysia celebration.
