Clean act by Samaritan (in Kajang)

Clean act by Samaritan

THE people of Kajang calls him “the best Bandaraya”, “the most dedicated social worker”, “Mr A1” and some have even given him a nickname — “health minister”.

Every morning at 7am, for three hours, they see this old man walking the main streets of Kajang, bending his lean figure every now and then to pick up litter along the way.

The tanned and hardy man usually walks from Taman Jelok Indah, Taman Restu, Taman Bukit Mewah and all the way to Jalan Semenyih.

He sometimes take a rake with him to make the job easier.

He collects the litter into a gunnysack, not uttering a word nor showing any sign of fatigue.

When the time is up, he takes the same route back to Taman Jelok Indah and burn the litter in a quiet corner of the road.

He could be easily identified because he rarely wears a shirt or T-shirt. If at all he does put on a shirt, it means he may have something on or may not be feeling well. He will usually finish work early that day.

“I see Mr Bandaraya almost every day since I was in primary school, it’s been more or less 15 years!” said resident Elissa Ng.

“I really admire his selflessness, not many people would want to do good for nothing these days. He is really someone to be emulated,” she added.

Although he is seen almost every day, Mr Bandaraya remains a mystery to most people as he speaks very little. Hence, it is not surprising that some have misunderstood him as mentally unsound.

When this writer tried to initiate a conversation, he only responded with several nods to certain questions.

For a cleaner town: Lee, better known as Mr Bandaraya collecting rubbish along main roads in Kajang.

He gave the most obvious acknowledgement to comments that there were many litterbugs in the city. He is friendly, alert and clear-minded.

As we followed him, we noticed that he did not take recyclable items such as aluminium cans that could be sold for money.

He is merely doing it to keep his township clean.

“Some residents wanted to pay him to do weeding at their house, but he rejected. He did not want the money,” said resident Calvin Tham, 57, whom we met at a coffee shop nearby.

After a long search, we managed to locate Mr Bandaraya’s daughter, who was equally quiet and told us nothing more than his name — Lee Thiam See — and that he is 76 with five children.

“We used to disagree with what he does, but we sort of understand now.

“Anyway, we are happy that he’s doing something he likes, and that it serves some good to the community,” she said

Rain causes flooding in Klang Valley

PETALING JAYA: Heavy rain caused flash floods at several places in the Klang Valley.

Rescuers brought out fire engines and boats after the floods affected several stretches of roads and residential areas yesterday.

A spokesman for the Kuala Lumpur Fire and Rescue Department operations centre said the flood waters peaked at around 3pm, with Salak South being among the worst-hit areas.

“Ten people were evacuated after they were trapped by floods along a row of shoplots near the Sungai Besi post office,” he said, adding that the floods subsided by 5pm.

A Selangor Fire and Rescue Department operations centre spokesman said parts of Ampang, Kajang and Pandan Indah were flooded at around 2pm but the waters subsided three hours later.

Malaysian Independent Animal Rescue president T. Puspa Rani, who runs an animal shelter in Metropoint, Kajang, said waters reached a height of about a metre at about 2pm.

She added that several houses were affected with furniture and electrical appliances damaged.
“The floodwaters came in very fast.

“The river overflowed. It was all very wet and very scary,” she said, adding that the dogs in her care were safe but “wet and shivering”.

The SMART tunnel was closed from 2pm. A Lingkaran Trans Kota (Litrak) spokesman said traffic was heavy until 5.30pm on the LDP from Kelana Jaya to Damansara Utama and the Puchong Jaya to Pusat Bandar Puchong stretch.

The AMP traffic infocentre tweeted that a mudslide at Taman Desa Melawati, which occurred at 5.15pm, had obstructed the MRR2's left and middle lanes, causing massive jams at Batu Caves.

In Kajang, the town was hit by an hour-long flashflood at around 1.30pm, with water levels reaching more than half a metre.

Kajang assemblyman Lee Kim Sin said about 50 shops were flooded after Sungai Jelok overflowed its banks.

“Worst was at Pasar Kajang with flood levels reaching 0.61m. The floods subsided after an hour.”
In Shah Alam, the Malaysian Highway Authority tweeted via @LLMinfotrafik at 3.10pm that the Seafield intersection at Shah Alam along the Elite highway was hit by flashfloods.

Flash floods hit Ampang, Cheras, Kajang

KUALA LUMPUR: Flash floods hit parts of the Klang Valley Wednesday afternoon, leaving Ampang, Kajang and Cheras inundated, and uprooting trees in two separate incidents.

A Kajang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the more than an hour-long downpour in the district, beginning 1pm, caused the water-level to rise quickly to one metre due to clogged drains, thus affecting the town.

Firemen in two engines monitored the situation and carried out rescue work before the flood waters subsided about 4pm, and the rain was reduced to a drizzle, he told Bernama here.

Last December, flash floods caused by heavy rain had affected the town, resulting in shopkeepers experiencing heavy losses and damaging several cars and motorcycles.

Meanwhile, the Smart Tunnel was closed to traffic to activate the floodwater channelling system, according to the Malaysian Highway Authority in a statement here.

A Federal Territory Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said flash floods also occurred near the Salak Selatan police headquarters, with the floods reaching 1.5 metres, as of 2pm.

He said the floods were expected to subside gradually as the downpour was heavy.

"We have despatched firemen in two fire engines to monitor the situation and carry out rescue work," he added.

The spokesman said flash floods also struck a housing area in Kampung Tasek Permai when the water level began to rise to 0.4 metre since 2pm.

Meanwhile, four vehicles were damaged by an uprooted tree at the Sungai Besi roundabout.

Another case of an uprooted tree was reported at the Seri Johor Flats in Jalan Tun Razak but there was no damage to any vehicle. Both incidents were reported about 2.20pm. - Bernama

Rush hour traffic was at its worst as massive jams were reported at Jalan Ampang, the Duke Highway, Jalan Kuching, the Jalan Duta flyover, the roundabout at Petaling Jaya Old Town, Jalan Ipoh and Jalan Kinabalu.

Flash floods also struck at Jalan Kampung Puah, Sentul, Jelatek, Taman Nirwana and Taman Tasik Permai, Ampang, Jalan Yaakob Latif, Cheras, Kampung Setia Jaya, Setapak, Lembah Keramat, Jalan Ipoh and Kajang.

Light Rail Transit commuters from Salak Selatan to Seri Petaling were also left stranded when the service was shut down for more than one hour due to flooding at a traction power substation at the Salak Selatan LRT station.

Dozens of Rapid KL buses had to be deployed to ferry the stranded commuters.

A Fire and Rescue Department official said three people were trapped in a taxi along Jalan Salak Selatan at 3pm after water levels on the road rose rapidly. The level rose to two metres causing the taxi driver to call for help.

“We rescued the two women and a taxi driver by boat,” he added.

The Smart Tunnel was also closed to traffic until further notice to allow the flood system to be operational.

Meanwhile a Civil Defence Department official said the thunderstorm which struck just after noon, also caused several landslips at Jalan 5/58 in Taman Supreme, Cheras and in Kampung Cheras Baru, Ampang, where two cars were buried under mud. No casualties were reported.

A van was also damaged after an uprooted tree fell on the vehicle at the Sungai Besi roundabout and many similar cases were reported including in Flat Sri Johor, Bandar Tun Razak here.

Until the next time, cheers.
