Homes burgled, burnt

This article appeared in the NST, Thursday, 9 June 2011. Thieves and robbers are getting bolder and crazier. It's really madenning what they are capable of doing, Below is the article from the newspaper.
KAJANG: Police are hot on the trail of a gang that breaks into homes and torches them to destroy the evidence.

The latest case was on Sunday night when a family of four in Taman Tasik Semenyih here nearly died in a fire that damaged the ground floor of their double-storey house.

They discovered the burglary only after finding valuables missing and signs of illegal entry.

Police said four similar cases had occurred since early this year, and believed that the same gang had committed them.

Kajang police chief Assistant Commissioner Rashid Ab Wahab said the robbers would break into vacant houses or those with occupants asleep, and set fire to them afterwards.

He said the homes burgled were in Taman Desa Mewah, Taman Tasik Semenyih and Sungai Kantan but only two homes showed signs of entry while the rest were too badly damaged.

Mahani Hashim, 33, whose home in Taman Tasik Semenyih was burgled and torched last Sunday, said she, her husband and two sons, including the youngest who is a disabled, were lucky to escape a fiery death.

"I woke up and smelt smoke and felt the heat. The electric supply was out and I opened my bedroom window and smelt smoke from downstairs.

"I called out to my husband and we woke our sons up.

"Luckily, we found the key to the grille window and jumped from the window.

"At first, we thought it was a fire caused by a short circuit but the firemen told us the kitchen door was broken and the wires of our automatic gate were cut."

She said the family later discovered that her purse and four gold rings were missing from the master bedroom.

Another victim, Mohd Zabri Yusof, 40, from Taman Desa Mewah, said his two laptop computers were missing after his house caught fire while he and his family were out of town on Friday.

"I thought it was because of a short circuit but I believed the fire was set by thieves who broke in while we were out.

"Last month, there was a break-in attempt but the suspects ran when my wife turned on the floodlights. We caught the incident on our closed-circuit television cameras, which we handed over to the police."

Until the next time, cheers.
