KAJANG: A group of absent-minded thieves thought they managed to escape scot-free after a security guard found them stealing from a donation box from a surau here.

However as they rushed to escape, the two suspects did not realise that they had left behind their pouch bag containing their identity cards and the RM50 they had stolen.

The thieves returned to the surau about 30 minutes later to retrieve the bag, only to be detained by the same guard who was waiting for them.

Kajang OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rashid Abdul Wahab said the two suspects, aged 18 and 20, were found snooping around the Al-Madina surau in Bandar Baru Bangi at about 3.30pm on Thursday.

They then fled on a motorcycle when the guard approached them.

"The guard inspected the donation box they were hovering around and found they had been fishing out money from it. Next to it, he found a pouch containing about RM50 that was stolen from the box and also the identification card of one of the thieves.

"The guard and another surau goer hid in the surau, expecting the men to come back for the bag and pounced on them when they did," he said.

The suspects were later picked up by police and are being investigated for theft.
