Chew Expresses Concerns On Taxi Drivers' Welfare, Vows To Help Solve Problems

KAJANG, March 12 (Bernama) -- The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun today expressed concerns on Kajang taxi drivers' welfare, saying that she would help solve their problems if given the mandate in the upcoming by-election.

She said several suggestions to improve the wellbeing of taxi drivers in Kajang would also be brought to the attention of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) and the Transport Ministry for consideration.

"The issue concerning taxi drivers' welfare cannot be sidelined because apart from having to work odd hours with uncertain income, they were also facing high risk of road accident," she told reporters after visiting the Kajang Taxi Terminal here.

Among the issues raised by taxi drivers here were the parking issue at the Kajang KTM Komuter station, rental car insurance and the special Social Security Organisation (Socso) benefit for taxi drivers.

"I have also agreed to become the patron of Hulu Langat Taxi and Rental Car Drivers' Welfare Association if elected as the state assemblyman after the by-election," she said.

Chew also visited the parking area at Kajang KTM Komuter station to get the clearer picture of the complaints made by taxi drivers in the area.

Also present were Hulu Langat Taxi and Rental Car Drivers' Welfare Association president Karnail Singh.

Meanwhile, Chew also rapped certain quarters who sabotaged the campaign for the by-election by tearing up posters of the contesting candidates put up by BN and the opposition pact.

"That is a dirty tactic. It shouldn't happen to either BN's or opposition's posters because were are focusing on healthy campaign measures," she said.

The Kajang state seat fell vacant after the sudden resignation of PKR assemblyman Lee Chin Cheh last January 27.

The by-election, scheduled for March 23, will see a straight fight between Chew, who is also MCA vice-president, and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
