KAJANG (Feb 5): MCA deputy president Datuk Wee Ka Siong has firmly denied all rumours and speculation that the Hulu Langat MCA division were “unhappy” with some of the candidates for the Kajang by-election as reported in the Chinese press during Chinese New Year.

Speaking to a press conference yesterday at about 9.45pm, after attending a meeting with the division’s youth and women’s wing, Wee said that whatever that was reported in the Chinese press was a "figment of someone’s imagination".

“There were some reports that our members in Kajang were not happy. All of this is nonsense because we just started work today. We opened the MCA office today at 10.00 a.m. and started work at 10.05.

“Whatever reports in the Chinese papers was based purely on their imagination. Don’t speculate, MCA leaders will follow whatever channel we have in order to get the final person to represent the party for the Kajang by-election,” said Wee.

A Chinese daily reported on Feb 3 that MCA will conduct a poll on four potential candidates – Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, MCA national youth chairman Chong Shin Woon, Hulu Langat division youth chief Pung Wai Hung and the division’s women chief Loh Lai Kuen.

It was reported that the party’s Hulu Langat division chief Lee Ban Sing submitted three names including himself to be fielded as a candidate but it was alleged that his name was not chosen for the final list. The report stated that Lee was unhappy with the going-on.

However, Wee did confirm that the party’s central leadership had received the candidate list proposed by the division.

“It is normal for every division to express that they have their local people to be chosen as candidate. Nevertheless, the process of naming the candidate commences after we have screened through the names.

“According to our procedures we have to seek consent with BN. The BN chairman will have a consultation with the president and they will finalise which candidate will be picked for the Kajang by-election.

“I used consultation because normally for any component party, the president of the component party will meet the PM and name the candidates and to get the consent and blessing from the PM and subsequently that person will be authorised to be candidate for that constituency,” he said.

To further strengthen the party’s electoral machinery, the division will also bring back two of its former state assemblymen to advise and assist MCA’s battle against the Pakatan Rakyat giant Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“I am also glad to announce that the MCA president (Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai) had invited former state assemblymen Datuk KC Chong, and Datin Paduka Low Lee Ling to assist us on the Kajang by-election.

“And I think their experience with handling the constituency can help the whole machinery to garner support from the local people,” said Wee adding that the party will field a “heavyweight” to contest against Anwar.

Division chief Lee also pleaded with the Chinese community of Kajang to give the party a chance as they desperately need a Chinese state assemblyman in Selangor.

“BN in Selangor are the opposition. Yet, we don’t have a single Chinese representative in the opposition. I’m only asking that they please give us a chance to represent them as the opposition,” said Lee.
