DISCORD at the Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) continues as its councillors once again walked out of the latest full board meeting on Wednesday.

This is despite a directive by the Selangor government for the parties involved to sort things out.

In August, 23 MPKj councillors tabled a motion of no confidence against the administration, with their representative Muhmad Hamidi Mohd Nazir citing the council’s poor performance, weak administration and management.

It is understood that the councillors were invited to the latest full board meeting by MPKj, as directed by Local Government, Studies and Research Committee chairman Datuk Teng Chang Khim.

At the meeting, MPKj councillor Mazwan Johar wanted to table a motion to remove Datuk Hasan Nawawi Abd Rahman as council president.

“We propose Datuk Hasan be removed from his position, and as chairman of the meeting, so that we can function in our role as councillors effectively,” said Mazwan.

The motion was disallowed by Hasan, who said that under the Local Government Act of 1976, he had the right not to allow a motion to be open to vote.

He added the councillors had no right to remove him as they were appointed by the state government.
The meeting was adjourned as the councillors then staged another walkout.

Hasan said that Teng had talked to him directly on the matter after receiving instructions from Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

“The councillors were asked to withdraw their previous motion of no confidence and resume duties as usual.

“They (the councillors) are disregarding the directive issued by the state government and continuing to avoid their responsibilities,” he added.

Meanwhile, Mazwan said they have submitted the relevant documents to the state government.

“We understand that the investigations will take time. Until then, we will continue to stay away from council meetings,” he said.
