SHAH ALAM – The Selangor state government has come up with a
comprehensive and strategic plan to solve the flash floods that is
becoming a regular occurrence in Kajang.
The state Exco for Infrastructure, Public Amenities, Agricultural
Modernisation and Agro-Based Industries Zaidy Abdul Talib claimed they
have identified that the cause of floods were related to long downpours,
insufficient river capacities, blockages of garbage, and land
development in the area.
“The Selangor Department of Irrigation & Drainage (JPS) have
completed upgrading works on the banks of Sungai Jeluh which costs
RM20,000. While maintenance and repairs on the flap gates costs
RM40,000, and the construction of a 54 meter flood wall, costs
RM50,000,” he said in a media statement to Selangor Kini.
“JPS have also upgraded the S corner which costs RM1.5 million,” he added.
Other short-term measures include ensuring better maintenance of the
water reservoir in Taman Saujana Impian and Taman TTDI Kajang, the
construction of Gross Pollutant Traps (GPT), a more improved water
drainage system in the city, and the implementation of flood warning
systems.
For a long-term plan, the construction of a 4.5 acre water reservoir
by the Kajang Prison has been made, along with the upgrading of bridges
and utilities.
“The tenders and works are underway this year. We hope the flood issue will be resolved once all this is completed,” he said.
